You will need to download the Respondus LockDown Browser if your instructor requires you to use the Respondus Browser or Monitoring tool to complete your test or quiz. Follow these instructions.
Students will be prompted, when they access the Quiz in Canvas, to either launch the LockDown Browser and start the quiz, or to download LockDown Browser from a specified link. The LockDown Browser application will then be installed directly on the student's Windows or Apple laptop, or Apple iPad. LockDown Browser is not currently compatible with any Android or Chrome OS devices.
By default, Canvas will create a question bank with a copy of the question when you create a question in a Canvas quiz. Please review your course question bank(s) to determine whether your quiz questions are already present in a question bank. If the quiz questions are not already in a question bank, you can use the following steps to create a question bank from your quiz. Briefly, you will export your Canvas quiz(zes) to a QTI file, then import the QTI file to your course.
Importing the QTI file into a Canvas course will create a question bank for each quiz that is in the QTI export file. The name of the question bank will automatically populate with the name of the quiz from which the questions are pulled.
At this point, the quiz(zes) in the export file will have imported into the Canvas course and a question bank will be generated for each imported quiz. If you imported the QTI file into the course from which you exported, you will have two copies of the quiz and you will likely want to delete one of these from the course.
Software that students use to securely take an exam or quiz. The test taker cannot open a new tab, print, or search while taking an exam using Respondus LockDown Browser. Students download the LockDown Browser software, launch it and then login to access Canvas and take the exam.
Respondus LockDown Browser is a special web browser that your students download to take quizzes and exams in Canvas. When you switch on LockDown for a quiz/exam, students cannot open the assessment without using LockDown Browser.
If quiz data is your jam and you want more specific data, consider using Quiz Statistics, which has the ability to download all student analysis data and an item analysis. It also breaks down each question!
Select the desired question bank, and any questions from that bank you wish to use. Click the check box next to the question if you want it to be added to the quiz. You can also resize the window to make it larger by clicking the bottom right corner of the Find Quiz Question window.
Your instructor might require the use of Respondus LockDown Browser for certain quizzes in your course. LockDown Browser is a locked browser used specifically for taking quizzes in Cougar Courses (Canvas). It prevents you from printing, copying, going to another URL, or accessing other applications (like Word) during a quiz. If a quiz requires that LockDown Browser be used, you will not be able to take the quiz with a standard web browser. Your instructor may also have enabled Respondus Monitor, which uses your webcam to record you while you take the quiz.
You cannot download LockDown Browser from an external link, you must do so from the Cougar Courses quiz/exam that requires it. Unfortunately this is only possible once the quiz is available. This is why we recommend instructors create a practice quiz that is available the whole term so that you can download LockDown Browser ahead of time and ensure it is working correctly at any point. If you do not see a practice quiz that requires LockDown Browser in order to download/test ahead of time, please contact your instructor to request they create one.
These instructions describe the manual process for transferring individual quizzes from Respondus 4.0 to Canvas via the QTI XML file type. The IMS QTI (Question and Test Interoperability) standard, allows questions to be imported or exported to other QTI-compliant programs, such as Canvas. When you are ready to import your quiz from Respondus into your Canvas course using the QTI Personality option, you will need to publish the quiz using a QTI zip file

Students should use a wired ethernet connection during high-stakes online exams. A poor internet connection can prevent students from completing quizzes and exams in Canvas. We DO NOT recommend students take online quizzes and exams using mobile hot spots, nor public or unsecured networks as these connections are unreliable. See our help page for more information about internet connectivity issues.
