The nuclei 129 Xe and 131 Xe have been studied by Coulomb excitation and by (α, n) reactions on 126 Te and 128 Te. Eleven new levels for 129 Xe and six for 131 Xe and B(E2) transition values for some of the low-lying states are reported. The present Coulomb excitation experiments together with published β-decay work enable some spin-parity assignments and restrictions to be made. The data are broadly consistent with the predictions of the particle-vibrator coupling model, although a thorough comparison requires further spectroscopic measurements and more detailed theoretical calculation. We have studied the spin relaxation of 129 Xe nuclei due to collisions with Rb atoms at Xe pressures of 245--1817 Torr. Our results can be characterized by two parameters, the Rb- 129 Xe velocity-averaged binary spin-exchange cross section left-angle σv right-angle and a rate γ M that characterizes spin relaxation due to van der Waals molecules. Our results complement earlier studies performed at Xe pressures of about 1 Torr and N 2 pressures of 10--100 Torr. This work is useful for predicting spin-exchange rates between polarized Rb atoms and 129 Xe nuclei


Potential energy curves for the ground 1 Σ + /sub g/ state of Xe 2 , the first four states of the Xe + 2 ions, and the eight Xe* 2 excimer states corresponding to the addition of a 6ssigma/sub g/ Rydberg electron to these ion cores have been computed using averaged relativistic effective core potentials (AREP) and the self-consistent field approximation for the valence electrons. The calculations were carried out using the LS-coupling scheme with the effects of spin--orbit coupling included in the resulting potential energy curves using an empirical procedure. A comparison of nonrelativistic and averaged relativistic EP's and subsequent molecular calculations indicates that relativistic effects arising from the mass--velocity and Darwin terms are not important for these properties of Xe 2 molecules. Spectroscopic constants for Xe + 2 are in good agreement with all electron CI calculations suggesting that the computed values for Xe* 2 excimers should be reliable. The lifetime for the O/sub u/ + state of the Xe 2 * is computed to be 5.6 nsec which is in the range of the experimentally determined values


We developed a new technique for measuring skin peripheral pressure (SPPP) in the leg by sup 133Xe clearance method and studied the SPPP in 50 normal volunteers and 86 diabetic patients, including 16 diabetics with gangrene. The SPPP in normal subjects, diabetics without gangrene and diabetics with gangrene were 41.9plus minus8.6 cmHsub 2O, 30.2plus minus12.7 cmHsub 2O and 19.4plus minus10.3 cmHsub 2O, respectively. Our result revealed that the SPPP in diabetics with gangrene was significantly lowest in three groups. The decrease of the SPPP in the diabetics may be due to the steal phenomenon of the blood flow through the abnormally dilated arteriovenous shunt vessels caused by the diabetic neuropathy. The measurement of the SPPP is very useful to assess the impairment of peripheral circulation. (author).


High-spin states have been populated in sup 121,122Xe using the reactions sup 108Pd(sup 16O,3n)sup 121Xe at 65 MeV and sup 96Zr(sup 30Si,4n/5n)sup 122Xe/sup 121Xe at 135 MeV. Coincident gamma rays following the neutron evaporation were detected by six Compton-suppressed Ge detectors and the TESSA3 array respectively. The level structure of sup 121Xe and sup 122Xe has been extended up to 47/2 Dirac_h and 32 Dirac_h respectively. In sup 121Xe a coupled band was found feeding the 19/2sup - level. In sup 122Xe several decays are suggested to be a sequence of stretched E2 quadrupole transitions connecting states of positive parity. While in sup 121Xe this phenomenon was not observed, at high spin a phase transition from prolate collective rotation to oblate single particle excitation was detected in sup 122Xe. For the new, probably positive parity side band insup 122Xe a four quasi-neutron or a two quasi-proton configuration of hsub 11/2 quasi-nucleons might be considered. The positive parity high spin structure in sup 122Xe contains three Isup pi = 22sup + states of different character. This is predicted by TRS (total Routhian surface) calculations, which identify these states as two shapes with predominantly prolate collective characteristic and the third as an oblate single particle configuration. 12 refs., 3 figs.


Hyperpolarized (HP) 129 Xe magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a novel iteration of traditional MRI that relies on detecting the spins of 1 H. Since 129 Xe is a gaseous signal source, it can be used for lung imaging. Additionally, 129 Xe dissolves in the blood stream and can therefore be detectable in the brain parenchyma and vasculature. In this work, we provide detailed information on the protocols that we have developed to image 129 Xe within the brains of both rodents and human subjects. 2018 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.


The nuclear spin polarization of 129 Xe can be enhanced by several orders of magnitude using optical pumping techniques, resulting in a dramatic enhancement of the 129 Xe Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) signal. The 'hyperpolarized' gas can be used for Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) of the void spaces of the lungs after introduction of the gas into the respiratory system. Furthermore, the high solubility of xenon in blood and lipids suggests the use of 129 Xe NMR for studying blood flow, permeability, perfusion and blood volume. Hyperpolarized 129 Xe MRI has the potential of combining the high sensitivity and functional information of radioactive tracer studies with the high spatial and temporal resolution of MRI. The spin-lattice relaxation time T 1 of 129 Xe in blood determines the loss of polarization during transit from the lungs to the tissue of interest. A difference in the relaxation times of xenon in oxygenated and deoxygenated blood could be used as a contrast mechanism in functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI). In this thesis, the hyperpolarized 129 Xe T 1 in human blood is measured in vitro as a function of blood oxygenation, and the relevant relaxation mechanisms are discussed. A new and unexpected finding is that the hyperpolarized 129 Xe NMR spectrum in blood is highly sensitive to blood oxygenation. Therefore, hyperpolarized 129 Xe NMR provides a powerful means of measuring blood oxygenation quantitatively and non-invasively. The interaction of xenon with hemoglobin is responsible for an oxygen-dependent shift of the 129 Xe NMR resonance of xenon in red blood cells. Injection delivery of hyperpolarized 129 Xe in solution could be a more efficient method of administrating the gas for functional NMR studies. For this purpose, suitable biocompatible carrier media have been studied.
